BLUES FOR WILLIAM BLAKE (A Poison Tree) I was angry with my friend I told my wrath, my wrath did end I was angry with my foe I told it not, my wrath did grow And I watered it in fears Night and morning with my tears And I sunned it with my smiles And with soft deceitful wiles And it grew both day and night Till it bore an apple bright And my foe beheld it shine And he knew that it was mine And into my garden stole When the night had veild the pole In the morning glad I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree

about

Byron Bay-based songwriter Steve Tyson is just releasing his new album ‘Banjo’s Last Ride’, his fourth in the last decade, and his first since 2017’s ‘Wrong Train Right Station.’

Steve’s previous three critically acclaimed records all scored 4 star reviews in the national music press, with comments such as these…

“…a master song craftsman with a nuanced lyrical touch and strong melodies. These are songs that are built to last” (Noel Mengel, Loudmouth)

“Tyson lets his ruined voice and lucid guitars do the talking” (Phil Stafford, Courier Mail)

“In Tyson’s follow-up to his auspicious debut album, family history again proves a rich source of inspiration, with his smoky singing and skilful guitar…” (Tony Hillier, Weekend Australian)

“...telling tales of home and family, of travel and politics, wrapped in a dark sense of humour that sets him apart from the myriad others plying a similar trade” (Sam Fell, Rhythms)

“Steve Tyson once again delivers a compelling selection of distinctly Australian storytelling.” (Kim Cheshire, Country Update)

“…this album is a tour de force from one of Australia's leading contemporary songwriters.” (Ian Dearden, Trad & Now)

What sets ‘Banjo’s Last Ride’ apart from his previous records, is that this set is very much a band album, with Steve bringing his touring band The Train Rex into the studio to record the twelve new songs.

The end result is a set of story-based, blues-infused contemporary folk songs, intimate story-telling one minute, swaggering alt.country the next, with a much tougher musical edge -- but still decidedly Australian in content.

Steve’s bassist of some forty years, John Barr, drives the rhythm section in tandem with one of Sydney’s most innovative drummers Andy Kirkcaldie. Colouring the songs with aching slide lines is guitarist Ian Shawsmith, with the glue (and stunning harmonies) provided by keys player Jodi Murtha. Steve’s own gritty guitar lines, plus colourful mandolin and banjo work, rounds out the band.

Steve Tyson & The Train Rex will be touring the album kicking off with a series of dates in New South Wales and Queensland during February and March 2022 with further dates to be added in the new year.

“Banjo’s Last Ride” is released on the Red Music label, via MGM.
